On any given day you may see Tia Nicole walking the streets of Baltimore wearing a CHIC floppy hat and a nice pair of shades. Her style ranges from classic CHIC to retro CHIC. She gives some of her fits a sporty look by adding one of many pairs of Converse sneakers. Shoes are her thing and she uses them well! We can't fail to mention her awesome fro! Take a look at what she had to say about her personal style and hair journey.
1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have been natural for about six years now and I transitioned into it. I definitely was not brave enough to do the big chop at that point in my life.
2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair texture is probably a 3C even though I don’t consider myself an expert on this matter.
3. What is your favorite go to hair style?
I love wearing my hair out, big and curly. I have known about clip-ins before they were really popular, so I have always favored adding volume to my hair with them. I moved to California right about the time I decided to go natural. I found a store in California that sold tons of curly hair. I found some hair close to my texture and made clips that blended perfectly with my hair. I like it big and full of volume. I still do that to this day.
4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
I have been wearing my hair natural for quite sometime. When you first transition, I think it takes a while to really get to know what your hair likes and doesn’t like. At this point, I am pretty much comfortable with my hair. As my life is getting busier and especially since I have picked up blogging, I have gotten a bit lazy with my hair. I really don’t like to wear it out because it takes a lot of work. Protective styles are really my best friend at this point. I think it especially allows me to play with color and I don’t have to put heat on my hair. I love color but I will never put it in my natural hair again. I have never found anything that didn’t damage my hair and it is just not worth it.
5. What do you love most about being natural?
I feel like my hair is stronger and healthier.
6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Shea Moisture is my favorite product period. I try not to overload on products so once it is done, I move onto something else or if I like it, I stay brand loyal. I hate clutter and I have had problems with hair product overload. I promised myself that I would never buy products on top of products. Right now, Shea Moisture does it all for me. The Coconut and Hibiscus…OMG, it smells so good. I use the hair products and bath products.
7. How would you describe your personal style?
I have such a hard time defining my style. If I see it and I like it, I buy it! I will admit, I favor black looks but every time I say that, I am never wearing black. I also love a good suit.
8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
Zara, Urban Outfitters and Free People. I should have stock in these companies because of how much I spend on a yearly basis. They are my go-to for my work and casual looks!
9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Sarah Jessica Parker, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, Cassie, Jourdann Dunn and Solange.
10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
It will probably have to be my converse. Just as much as I love hats I also love shoes. I work for an online retailer that sells shoes, so my obsession has grown pretty substantially. Converse pretty much has me in their pocket. I’ll be a fan for life.
11. As we prep for fall, what is your favorite Fall trend! What are you excited about?
Knee-high and thigh-high boots! I am completely obsessed with them. My legs are so skinny and I have never been able to find a pair of boots that actually fit my legs until recently. I plan to splurge on a pair of Stuart Weitzman boots for Fall. They fit like a glove and they are very comfortable. I have my eyes on the Hijack boot and the Highland Boot.
12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
The first designer thing I have ever purchased was a pair of Chanel aviator glasses when I turned 21. Years later, they are still my most prized possession.
13. Where do you draw your style inspiration?
I work in fashion marketing and I also teach fashion merchandising. Nevertheless, I find it very important to always educate yourself and as I do so, I draw inspiration from numerous places. I read WWD, Vogue magazine’s from all over the world, Style.com, T Magazine, blogs, Love Magazine; you name it, I probably have a tear sheet laying around somewhere.
14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Get to know the brands and silhouettes that work best for your shape. I think it is important to dress for your body and be comfortable in those items.
