Check out what she had to say about her personal style and beautiful fro!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I've been natural since 2000 and did so by transitioning. No one big chopped back then, however, after having my son in 2013 I experienced a LOT of post-partum shedding and breakage. As a result, I did my first big chop in February of this year, and haven't stopped cutting it since!

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
Type 4. Kinkt Curly.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
Twist outs. EASY as pie.

CHIC of the Week| Tolu

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week's CHIC is the lovely Tolu from Southern California! Her unique style varies from classic to embracing her Nigerian culture! Tolu owns her style and rocks it well! When it comes to her fro she loves to use protective styles because of their versatility and convenience. Check out more on how Tolu describes her personal style and fro!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I've been natural since 2009. I transitioned.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair is typical kinky Nigerian hair. :) The official texture would be 4C.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
I've come to love protective styles, especially crochet braids! I wore the Freetress Bohemian crochet braids for quite some time before switching to my current style, which is crochet Marley twists. I love that protective styles are quick, versatile, and give my hair room to breathe and grow.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
My problem areas would definitely be my edges. They are thin and very, very short. I try to avoid putting tension on my edges in order to promote growth.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
There's nothing fun about your scalp burning as you wait for the relaxer to fully kick in. Nothing. I love that being natural doesn't require this torture and that it maintains the dignity of the hair God gave me.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
My top three hair products are Cantu shea butter, coconut oil, and Aunt Jackie's Moisture-Intensive Leave-In conditioner.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as clean and classic. I love taking everyday textures and patterns like chambray, plaid, and stripes and dressing them up to create a nice, clean look. The following quote also captures my approach to fashion: “Modesty isn’t about hiding yourself; it’s about revealing your dignity” (Jessica Rey).

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
My favorite clothing stores are Target, Express, Nordstrom, and Forever 21. I also LOVE boutiques and have found some of my all-time favorite pieces at a boutique called Envy Me Fashions.  As a fashion lover on a budget, I've found that you don't have to spend a ton of money to look chic.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
My favorite celebrity fashionista is Kate Middleton.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
The most worn pieces in my closet would have to be my Z Supply t-shirts. They truly are the PERFECT t-shirts!

11. What is your favorite fall/winter trend?
For fall, I love the oversized trend- oversized sweaters, oversized cardigans, oversized vests, etc. I'm also all about plaid and over-the-knee boots!

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet?
My most prized items in my closet would be my traditional Nigerian outfits, which are custom-made from beautiful lace and ankara fabrics. These outfits capture the spirit and beauty of my Nigerian-American heritage.

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I draw my style inspiration from friends and from other fashion bloggers on Instagram. I also love walking around clothing stores and being inspired by all the different possibilities.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
My fashion advice would be to "do you." I think for too long, I felt like I had to dress a certain way to be cool or to really be considered "fashionable," until I finally accepted that my style (clean and classic as it is) is just fine. Ultimately, you need to feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing. I would also say to have fun with your clothes! I love expressing my creativity by finding new ways to style old things so that they look like completely new and different outfits. People often think I own a bazillion clothes, but it's often some of the same foundational pieces styled in new ways. Experiment with different combinations of clothes and with styling them in different ways. For example, I found that simply tying a knot at the bottom of an old black skirt could instantly take the entire outfit up a notch!

CHIC of the Week| Keshia

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week's CHIC of the Week is the lovely Keshia. On any given day, you can catch her strutting the streets of Atlanta dressed in bright colors to match her bright smile! Keshia has a great eye for colors and prints! She always know how to add the perfect POP of color to any outfit she wears! Aside from her awesome style, she rocks fabulous curls that we obsess over all of the time! Check out what Keshia had to say about her hair and CHIC style!.

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have been natural for seven years. I transitioned for seven months during college by wearing roller sets. Once I became tired of dealing with the two different textures and I felt I had enough new growth, I did the big chop.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?

I would describe my hair texture as kinky curly. It’s tightly coiled in small curls, so I can do a great twist out, roller set, or an afro. The kinky curly texture is so versatile!

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
Lately, because I have had a very hectic schedule, my go-to style has been a simple puff, styled using a small banana clip. I’ve definitely become a “lazy natural” after being natural for seven years. (ha ha) I maintain it by moisturizing my hair every morning with water and leave-in conditioner, and sometimes, a curl defining product. If I have the time to style my hair, my go-to style is a chunky twist out. I love the volume that it gives and I love how quick it is. I maintain it by re-twisting it and moisturizing it every other night.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
My problem area has been finding the time to maintain my hair to keep it healthy and moisturized. I’ve been combating that by holding myself to a wash schedule, washing and deep conditioning every two weeks, at least.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I love being able to walk outside it the rain and humidity and not having to worry about my hair style being ruined! lol

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
I do not have any top brands for hair products, but the top 3 product types that I always use are a leave-in conditioner, a setting foam when twisting my hair, and a good conditioner for deep conditioning.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is casual chic. I enjoy being stylish in my own way, but I am also a bit of a “tom girl” as I like to say. I love comfort, sneakers, and fitted tees, but I accessorize them with lipsticks and jewelry.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
My favorite clothing stores include Forever 21, H&M, and Express, because those stores offer stylish pieces without breaking the bank. I do not shop often, so when I occasionally purchase items, it’s great to do so in an affordable way.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
My favorite celebrity fashionista is Angela Simmons. She always has the best looks, whether she’s dressed up or casual.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?

The most worn piece in my closet is a black and white striped maxi skirt. I’ve had it about two years now and I wear it with everything from graphic tees, crop tops, blouses, tunics, you name it. It’s so comfortable and fun for spring and summer.

11. What is your favorite fall trend and what are you most excited about?
My favorite fall trend is the trench coat. I love how it can effortlessly take your look up a notch and keep you warm at the same time.

12. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I draw style inspiration from Instagram, believe it or not. I follow several stylish bloggers, and they are always a great resource for new ideas when I need them.

Yellow 2 edit2.jpg

13. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Be yourself. Do not feel obligated to follow all of the fashion trends. Wear what you love, what flatters your body, and what makes you feel most authentic. Fashion should always be fun for you and should fit your special personality.

CHIC Of the Week| Eny

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment
This week’s CHIC is the beautiful Eny of Styleestadiaries! Eny caught our eye with her bright bold style and super cute highlighted fro! We love that Eny has fun with her style and mixes up colors and prints. You can catch Eny making the streets of LA her runway, and doing it with effortless style and grace! She never disappoints us each time we see her in our timeline; and this is why she is this week’s CHIC! Check out what Eny had to say about that beautiful fro and style! 1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop? I didn't transition in the true sense of the word because I have been through many hair style transitions because I am never satisfied with having the same look for too long. So 4 years ago, when I got bored again I just shaved off my relaxed hair and I have been natural ever since. 2. How would you describe your hair texture? Thick and coily    3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?   I normally wear my hair in 2 strand twist outs. I try to prevent it from getting dry and stay refreshed  by putting in a curl enhancing smoothie every couple of days. I also go to a hair stylist for a revamp (color, deep condition) every once in a while.    4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?   This shrinkage is no joke. I still have not mastered the art of pampering my hair (It's a work in progress). I try to borrow tricks from the hair salon because they know how to loosen up the curl pattern without heat which makes my hair manageable. Until I master this skill I will continue rocking my Afro with the shrinkage.    5. What do you love most about being natural? Being able to transform my look at any time I want. It is very versatile. 6. What are your top 3 hair products?   Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Jamaican Castor Oil, and Curls Unleashed moisturizer.    7. How would you describe your personal style? Quirky with a sartorially masculine influence    8. What are your favorite clothing stores? H&M, Forever 21, Barneys, Zara, Great Labels, American Apparel, trust me, it's an endless list. 9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas? Giovanna Battaglia who is the Fashion Editor of Vogue Japan, and singer-songwriter, and certified chef Kelis. These two ladies have something in common, and that is the constant transformation of their style. They never hesitate to try something new.     10. What is the most worn piece in your closet? I abuse a lot of pieces in my closet, but currently, it would be my American Apparel black high waist easy jean. 11. What is your favorite Spring trend? Gaucho Pants. I love how easy breezy they are, and can either be worn casually or out on the town, and an event.     12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge? A vintage Burberry saddle shoulder bag. Luckily I didn't have to splurge, it is a hand me down from my mother. Score!     13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from? My mother, my mood, and my surroundings.    14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers? Two things: In my opinion, fashion is not meant to be taken too seriously. The more you experiment with your wardrobe, the more exciting it gets. You will discover so much about yourself, than you even realize existed. Also, one can draw fashion inspiration from others, but always remember to stay true to your individuality. You don't want to keep reworking yourself to look like the next person. It get's confusing. But above all - dare to be different. CHIC of the Week| Jewel

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistas1 Comment

The CHIC of the Week is back and to kick off our comeback is the oh so lovely Jewel aka @stlyleoptimist! Jewel is a huge fan of our page and blog and we couldn't help but love her smile, style, and her super cute fro! Jewel lives in Minneapolis and loves to hit the streets to show off her classy, chic and timeless looks! Check out what she had to say about her personal style and fro!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have been natural for 7 months, having big chopped in September 2014. Prior to my big chop, I transitioned for 9 months.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
I would describe my hair texture as kinky curly. My curl pattern in the back is much looser.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
I’m a wash and go gal, but lately I have been experimenting with rod sets and finger coils. My wash and gos never seem to last over 3 days. By day three it’s a huge puff which I love! In maintaining my WNG’s I simply sleep with a satin bonnet, and spritz some water or leave in conditioner in the am, fluff and go.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
I wouldn’t say problem areas per se, but my hair is really dry, so I tend to gravitate towards products that promote moisture retention and just keep my hair moisturized.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
What I love most about being natural is just wearing my natural hair. Whether it’s a rod set, defined wash and go or my afro puff, I just can’t get enough of my texture. Keeping my hands out of my hair is a problem. LOL

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
I swear by kinky curly knot today. It’s so amazing. I’ve been using it since I was transitioning and I use it now. It really does melt the tangles out of my hair, which save me lots of frustration. I also love the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner. It’s really moisturizing and great for my color treated hair. My hair seems to love Lotta Body Moisturize Me Curl and Style Milk. It’s my go to product for my rod sets.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my style as eclectic. Non-committal if you will. For the most part, I like feminine pieces, but I tend to dress according to how I feel.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
Nordstrom has really become a favorite within recent years. I also love Saks OFF Fifth, TJMaxx, Asos and Forever21 for basic pieces.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
I’ve always admired Zoe Saldana’s style and her confidence. Tamera Mowry has become one of my recent celeb inspirations.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
My French Connection sweater. I think I’ve worn it most on my blog and IRL. I’ve layered it, worn it with a skirt , and OTK boots, skinny denim, blazer. It just makes me happy when I wear it.

11. What is your favorite Spring trend?
I’m not really big into trends, but I’ve been purchasing new lip colors for Spring. I’m a colorful person; bright, fun colors make me happy and when I think Spring, I think bright fun colors.

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
I’m obsessed with the color blue. It’s crazy how the color blue makes me happy. I purchased these blue clustered Jcrew Earrings (that sold out) that I love so much. I won’t allow anyone to borrow it because it’s sold out and I wouldn’t be able to repurchase.

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from everywhere. Street style (people watching is so fun), art, blogs, magazines, television shows, movies, and Instagram. There’s a lot of inspiration on Instagram.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
An advice that I adhere to is to know what works for my body and be comfortable with my fashion/style choices. Being comfortable is everything to me. If you feel uncomfortable in it, don’t force it. I also live by the cost per wear rule. what I mean is, I’m much more likely to splurge/invest in staple items that can traverse from season to season or something I can wear through the years versus purchasing a reasonably priced item that I may wear once or twice and toss away.

How can we keep up with you?

CHIC of the Week | Staci

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week's CHIC is the lovely Staci of Coco and Click blog! On any given day you can catch Staci walking the streets of New Jersey with a huge smile, big hair, and a stylish head to toe outfit! We simply love Staci's bright personality and how she effortlessly styles her favorite thrifted pieces. Staci is a fashionista, that doesn’t have to spend much to look CHIC. Her motto is "Dress to impress the mirror and shop to impress your pockets." Gotta love a CHIC with that mentality! Check out what Staci had to say about her fabulous fro and style!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I've been natural all of my life. I've texturized my hair once when I was in 7th grade and added some color with highlights when I thought it was cute in my teens. But this past May is when I really started to embrace my natural curls; so it was more of a transition — I wish I had the guts for a big chop!

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
Curly. I used to hate when my hair was described as kinky. But, I guess it's kinky curly too. Certain sections have different type of curls.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
My go to style depends on the season. Wash and go, hands down, in the Summer. Having my curls be free and really letting them do its thing makes life in the Summer more enjoyable. I would say a twist out in the colder months. It allows my hair to retain moisture, while also, having a style that is easy and no fuss.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
My problem areas have always been my crown and my ends. When I began this journey, I did a lot of research on how to get the healthiest hair and leave-in conditioner has been my best friend. I try to focus on my ends when applying leave-in and tucking them away whenever possible. Also, I've learned my heatless self-challenges have been the best thing I have done for myself. And of course, water! Drinking lots and lots of water!

5. What do you love most about being natural?
The freedom and versatility! I was thinking about this the other day.. The journey I have been on not only has helped me embrace my natural curls but, has helped in all aspects of my life. I see myself differently. I view my curls as beautiful and not full of resistance. I have gotten healthier, really trying to improve myself in all aspects of my life. But, it has definitely started in vain and with my curls.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Water, definitely! Leave-in conditioner, I swear by it. And oil ... I love olive, coconut, and tea tree oils!

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as comfy chic? I don't know. I always say I am a situational dresser. Once I know where I am going, I have the perfect outfit in my head. I dress to impress the mirror :)

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
Thrift, vintage, outlets, ... I shop every where.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
I love Solange's signature and effortless style. I love how Rihanna can wear anything and everything. I appreciate how Kim Kardashian knows how to dress her body. I enjoy other people's personal styles. I love Nicole Richie, Zoe Kavitz, and Blake Lively!

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
In the Summer, vintage denim cutoffs and in the Fall/Winter, probably my leather jackets!

11. What is your favorite winter trend?
I love thigh high boots and Winter White. Yum!

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
I would have to say some of my vintage designer findings like my Christian Dior coat and blazer, both purchased for $20 each!

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
Street-style and old editorials from the 70's and 90's.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
What I always say "Dress to impress the mirror and shop to impress your pockets."

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
have been a natural since I was able to style and do my own hair. At the age of fourteen my mother wanted to try something different with my hair. I have always had big, curly hair! My mother decided to bring me to a hair salon to have my hair permed. For me, it was the very first time ever witnessing my hair very straight and smooth. After my first perm I started to notice dry and damaged hair. However I liked the state of my hair being straight, so I continued to have my hair permed. Eventually I did not like the hard brittle condition the perm left my hair in. My curls were ruined my Afro was not fro'ing! I had to do something about this situation. I had my very first big chop in the fall of 2011. Come to find out that it would not be my last big chop! My hair started to grow in beautifully and fully! Since then I have stayed far away from perms.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
I would describe my hair texture as a 3b. My hair is very thick and sometimes my hair texture can be somewhat coarse. I have curls and a few spirals. My curls are much more defined towards the end of my hair rather than the root.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
have a few "go to styles" my favorite style is a ponytail/Mohawk type of situation. I maintain this look by applying Shea Moisture Creme Smoothie every two days or so to the curls within the ponytail and also the curls that are not within the ponytail. I would usually keep this style in for a good four days or so, redoing the ponytail if need be.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
My problem area I would say is wearing my hair out on hot, humid summer days. My hair becomes very frizzy and brittle battling the summer heat. I've come to realize that on days such as these, I'll either twists my hair and wear it as that or I'll do a simple bun to not dry out the moisture in my hair.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I love everything about being natural! I love displaying who I am through my hair, sometimes I feel as though my hair has a personality of its own! I love trying new styles out. I love that there is so much natural hair inspiration out there ( via FB, IG, Twitter, Tumblr, Blogs ) it is truly amazing! I love that we "naturalistas" stick together and can give advice as well as receive advice! We Rock!!!

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
My top three hair products are Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Herbal Essence Curl Boosting Mousse and Organix Moroccan Argan Oil.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as versatile and literally everywhere. I love weird looking patterns and designs, I also love "Plain Jane" looking items. I love bright, exciting colors however I love the color black as well. If I had to choose a word I would choose the word underrated.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
My favorite clothing stores are H&M, Target, Burlington Coat Factory, Marshall's and Forever21.

9.  Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
My favorite celebrity fashionistas are Chrisette Michele, Zendaya, Tia Mowry, Solange, Rihanna and Tracee Ellis Ross.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
The most worn piece in my closet are my Uggs. I throw them on almost everyday.

11. What is your favorite fall/winter trend?
My favorite fall/winter item trend is oversized sweaters and scarves and wool socks.  I love to layer.

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
My most prized item in my closet as of right now are my black suede thigh high boots. I got them about two weeks ago and I have been in love with them ever since!

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I draw my style inspiration from celebrity style pics, fashionistas on Instagram/Facebook and magazines.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Your style is your style. Do not let anyone or anything dictate what you should or should not wear. Be confident in who you are! I am 5 feet tall, one hundred pounds, and a cup, a size zero in jeans and I have just as much confidence as Beyoncé! Lol. What I am saying is that there is only one of YOU in this world, so leave YOUR mark. There were plenty of times I was asked "what are you wearing?" Or laughed at for what I was wearing. I did not let that affect who I was because once you know who you are, nothing can worry, disturb or upset you! Why fit in with everyone else? When you can stand out for expressing who you really are through what you wear! Be your own definition of style and fashion but remain humble in doing so. Stay classy and graceful!  & remember a great color lip can change your whole outfit!

CHIC of the Week| Charmsie

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

Meet this week's CHIC; the beautiful Charmaine Daudu aka "charmsie" from Atlanta! We have had our eye on Charmsie for quite some time now; sheis definitely one of our favs and we love her YouTube channel. What we love most about Charmsie is her eclectic, and unique personal style. Charmsie is never afraid to take fashion risks, and this is what makes her awesome!! With every outfit she transforms herself and SLAYS! Charmsie also has the perfect spiral curls that we can not help but obsess over!  We are super excited to have her as our CHIC of the week! Check out our interview with her and learn more about her style and hair!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have always been natural, but I didn't really discover my hair texture until much later in life. I grew up in Canada and at the time we really did not have products catered to my hair type. When I finally started to wear my hair in my early 20s, I experimented with a lot of hair dye and straightening ( without heat protectors!) so I spent many years with damaged hair. I finally cut my damaged hair a few years ago after discovering the natural hair community on youtube.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
I would say it's fine/low density hair with a mixture of waves & spirals. My hair gets curlier at the ends vs. from the root.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
Definitely a wash & go, as many other styles do not work for my fine hair ( braid outs/twist outs etc. )...I typically co-wash my hair every other day and rock my curls. When I want a break, I will slick back my hair into a bun.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
The hair at the nape of my neck is always so much shorter than the rest of my hair, and I'm finally trying to pay better attention to it by adding extra moisture to that area.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I think natural hair has a lot of personality. When my hair is straightened I feel very "mainstream" whereas the curls add some spunk.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner , Ouidad Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel, Giovanni Weightless Direct Leave In Conditioner

7. How would you describe your personal style?
Eclectic and a bit theatrical. I think of outfits as a tool to play different characters within my personality or creativity.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
ASOS.com, Revolveclothing.com, Riverisland.com, Zara, Ebay for vintage pieces

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Miroslava Duma, Jenna Lyons, Nicole Richie, Solange, Rihanna , 70s Cher

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
Probably a bargain store men's denim top that I live in, or my leopard robe ( I work from home lol)

11. What is your favorite fall/winter trend?
I'm a sucker for a good poncho, practical and chic at the same time!

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
A sequined top that I fell in love with as a child when I first saw it in my grandmother's closet in Barbados. A few years ago I let her know just how magical it was to me as a child and she let me have it. It's sentimental and gorgeous at the same time.

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I love looking at street style pics online as well as retro celebrity style pics. I have a love affair with the 1970s specifically.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Wear what makes you feel good. I didn't feel like myself when I tried on a bunch of wedding dresses and I realized I just wasn't meant to wear white! Life is too short to stick to the fashion "rules."  Trends are fun, but if you are only wearing them because they are "in" and it's not a true reflection of you, what's the point? I would also stress the fact that online shopping can be an amazing way to find unique pieces and save money! Subscribe to different online retailers to hear about sales and sift through sites when you have some down time...if you have a wedding in 3 months, don't go to the mall the weekend before the wedding, you will end up spending more than necessary, giving yourself stress, and you may end up twinning with another party guest. Shop online, in advance, and you will have unique pieces that you love, without breaking the bank!

CHIC of the Week | Sydney

This week's CHIC is the lovely Sydney aka Posh Syd. Sydney is from Brooklyn, NY, but currently resides in West Reading, PA! Sydney definitely has not lost her city girl style! She has an effortlessly "posh" style which is why her name is so fitting! We also can't help but love her gorgeous curly fro!! Check out our interview with Sydney and what she had to say about her style and beautiful natural hair!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I'm 27 months Post Relaxer ( last relaxer was  September 12') and my big chop was April 13' so I've been completely natural a little over a year and a half.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair is very kinky, coily and coarse... But I love it!

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
My go to style would have to be the twist out. It took me some time to master it , but once I did, THAT WAS IT! Lol I try to get my twist-outs to last a couple of days ( 5 + , yea I definitely try to stretch it lol) so at night I use 4 elastic bands and put 4 puffs in my hair.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
I have extremely dry hair and scalp  so I am always using my infamous spray bottle , filled with water and leave in conditioner ,on my hair to keep it moisturized. I also massage oil (Jamaican black castor oil) into my scalp every other day because my scalp is very dry  and apply castor oil to seal my hair after its sprayed.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I love the versatility of being natural and the liberation it gives me. I can embrace things such as enjoying a perfect rainy spring day without searching for my hair net, shower cap and paddle brush to put my hair in a doobie and run to the nearest place for shelter because I need my wash & set to last until my next salon visit! lol My natural hair texture is me, and  overall I love just being able to be Sydney.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Eco Styler Gel
Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Camille Rose Almond Jai Butter

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my style as "Affordably, Effortlessly Chic" if there is such a category lol

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
My favorite places to shop would be ; h&m,forever21, Zara and I am also a big fan of thrifting as you can find some hidden gems at the thrift store.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
BEYONCÉ is my idol  and I love her style, however I adore her sister Solangé's style as well. Two different sides of the spectrum however I love them both and when combined I get Sydney's style.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
My wardrobe is so diverse  and ever changing so at any given moment a particular piece can be my staple for that period. Right now my staple piece would be my faux fur vest. I love fur right now!

11. What is your favorite fall/winter trend?
I love knit scarves and fly boots!

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
I actually thrifted a mink coat and I love it! I've always wanted one and couldn't believe the price I was able to get it for. You can't tell me anything when I put that baby on!

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from everywhere , people, places, movies etc. lol . I can go to the grocery store and see different bags of chips placed  together and the color placement of the bags can set off an idea for a new look . It's crazy! Lol

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
My one fashion tip would be to draw inspiration from people, places and things but ultimately make it your own. Fashion is the expression of ones self through clothing and you do not need a a million bucks to look like a million bucks!

CHIC of the Week | Melissa Goodwin

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

CHIC of the Week is back and we have a fresh face to share with you! Her name is Melissa Goodwin and her fun, flirty, yet sporty style was one we just had to learn more about! Melissa is from Oakland, CA and is now living in Southern California. We absolutely love her Cali style and golden tresses! Check out what Melissa had to say about her CHIC style and hair!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
Technically speaking I have always been “natural”. My hair has never been chemically straightened or processed. However, I grew up addicted to the flat iron! Over the years my hair has endured plenty of heat damage, bleach and color damage as well. I lost a lot of length and natural hair elasticity from this, causing breakage. I decided about 5 months ago that I was putting my flat iron, curling iron, and curling wand to rest. No big chop, just a trim of my split ends.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
I am half Caucasian and half African American, with about three different hair textures combined. I would say most of my hair could be considered “kinky” or 4b/4c texture with a few areas of 4a type texture. I have a ton of volume, and my curl fro just gets bigger with time.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
My go to protective style, when I haven’t had time to install some sort of curling mechanism, is a romanesque, crown-like do, with a twist on each side, in a low bun, which you can see in some of my photos. My favorite “curly fro” go to style would be the 3rd or 4th day flexi-rod spiral curls. If I have an event or something special to do, I plan in advance to do my hair at least 2 days prior so that I will have the maximum volume I love from 3rd and 4th day hair.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
I have so many problem areas believe it or not! My biggest challenge is keeping my hair moisturized. My hair is naturally extremely dry, and soaks up everything I put on it without being weighed down or oily. I manage my dry hair by rarely shampooing, using lots of conditioner and water, coconut and argon oils, and sleeping with a satin scarf and pillowcase.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
My all time most favorite part about being natural is the versatility! My hair is my biggest fashion accessory, and being that fashion is my first love, changing up my hair is a must. I also enjoy the trial and error, figuring out what works for my hair type and sharing experiences with curl-friends and other curly girls.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
This is hard because I have so many! I would say my number one favorite product is the Crème of Nature Argon Oil from Morocco Style & Shine Foaming Mousse. This mousse allows my curly styles to last 5+ days at a time. It gives a strong hold but leaves my hair very soft and smelling amazing. My 2nd favorite product is Trader Joes Nourish Spa conditioner. I use it as a conditioner, a co-wash, and a deep conditioner. It’s great because it is very moisturizing, all natural with no sulfates, and super affordable. My third favorite product is a tie between the Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk, and the Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream. They both work great on my hair wet or dry, and both provide long lasting moisture.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is metamorphic. I change my style based on mood, time, season, etc. I don’t like to box myself into one particular style because I see potential in all arenas of fashion and style. I feel that with the right inspiration and creativity a true fashion lover can make anything work for their own personal style.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
My favorite clothing stores are MANGO, Zara, Top Shop, Nordstrom, and H&M. I also enjoy shopping online stores such as ASOS, NastyGal and Victoria Secret. Recently I have been having great finds at Bebe and Guess.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, Kylie Jenner.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
My black skinny jeans because I can dress them up or down.

11. What is your favorite fall/winter trend?
Fall/Winter is a great season for fashion because you have the ability to layer more clothing and be creative. Currently, my favorite fall trend is the elongated pea coats, blazers and trench coats. They are a simple addition to an outfit, but provide a big impact and statement.

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
I have a pair of Jessica Simpson heels that I bought at Macy’s for my birthday a few years ago. Since then, these heels have become my go to’s for everything. They are not only comfortable, but they go with almost everything I wear, and ironically enough they match my hair color. Go figure.

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
I typically draw inspiration from everywhere, art, music, nature etc. But I also draw inspiration from a few favorite blogs and websites. Karla’s ClosetMicah Gianneli, andPinterest to name a few. I am also very inspired by my favorite high end designer label, Chanel. Classic, bold and feminine.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Fit it is the most important part of fashion and style. Ill-fitting clothing can be unflattering and distracting. Even oversized trends have to fit properly in order to achieve the look. Finding clothing to fit individual body types can be difficult, however it is worth the effort to try on everything before you purchase. Otherwise I recommend seeing a professional tailor to achieve a sharp, “stop and stare” look.

CHIC of the Week| Cam Veronica

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week’s CHIC is the lovely Cam Veronica from Boston, MA. We love everything about Cam’s style; from the way she mixes in feminine silhouettes to her signature added touch of a floppy hat!  Cam is always so poised and polished with her looks. She sports a CHIC natural color pallet that we can’t help but admire. We also love Cam’s fierce tapered curls, and lovely marley twists that she wears as a protective style. Check out what she had to say about her hair and personal style!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I've been natural since 2010, I transitioned my pixie cut for awhile, but eventually did a chop (it wasn't all that big) in 2011.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair is fine, kinky and coily- 4C hair texture perhaps.

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
I fluctuate between two styles: my tapered fro and marley twists. When my hair is out I cowash weekly using a twisting butter to flat twist and set my fro. When in the protective style, I make sure to moisturize daily (with water) and use a light leave in conditioner once a week.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
Retaining moisture is a constant struggle for my mane. I have to be very proactive about making sure my hair has enough water on a daily basis. By that I mean spraying my hair with water (sometimes including a mix with aloe vera) and drinking lots of water! A few years ago I became much more mindful about what I eat and drink. The increase in vegetables and water and decrease in consuming processed foods definitely improved my overall health - healthy hair included!

5. What do you love most about being natural?
The versatility of natural hair is unparalleled, but what I love most about being natural is the sense of community and empowerment that comes with wearing your natural hair. I'll see someone on the street with a fro and for whatever reason, I feel like there is a shared experience between us.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Right now, these three products have my heart. I prefer brands that have natural ingredients and smell delicious.
1. Camille Rose twisting butter (an absolute staple)
2. Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Hair Oil
3. Karen's Body Beautiful Luscious Locks Hair Mask

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I wear a lot of black and maintain a mostly neutral color palette. I prefer feminine silhouettes and like to incorporate a touch of menswear in the form of structured blazers, oversized pieces and of course – hats.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
ASOS. I’ve purchased some amazing leather goods from here that have lasted years. I’m a fan. Madewell and Everlane are becoming new favorites as well.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Victoria Beckham, Kelly Rowland and of course, the Olson twins.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
A wool blazer that I picked up on consignment is by far my most worn piece. It was $15 and crafted by an awesome indie Parisian designer – love at first sight.

11. What is your favorite Fall trend?
Oversized knits and a dark lip – there will be a lot of that on the blog over the next few months.

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
Just about every day, I wear a gold bangle that was passed down by my great grandmother. It’s from Trinidad and serves both as a reminder of my roots and my family legacy that I get to carry around with me. The bangle fits me too big so one day I started wearing it as a forearm cuff and I haven’t stopped since.

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?
Art, photography, other style bloggers, and my mood inspire my looks.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Style is an extension of your personality – so wear what makes you feel best, but don’t be afraid to take risks. I believe in quality over quantity. Quality doesn’t always mean expensive, pay attention to those fabric labels and craftsmanship! Investing in staple items that will last not only saves money in the long run but also helps you curate style that truly is personal.

CHIC of the Week| Irene aka irock

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

Irene caught our attention when we first started CHICNaturalistas and has been a very faithful supporter ever since then! What caught our eye was her use of bright colors and patterns for the Spring and Summer, her creative use of fabrics to make her own dress AND how she has kept up the pace with her on trend Fall fashions! Let's not forget her hair. Irene ROCKS her awesome fro or a great protective style! We can't decide which one we're more obessed with! Check out what Ms. irock had to say about her style and natural hair journey!

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I’ve been natural for a little over two years (although I am currently in the process of transitioning yet again to do my second Big Chop) I transitioned the first time for 5 months using Twist and Box Braids as my protective style before finally deciding to do the Big Chop.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair texture (if we are talking hair chart type) I would say is a 3C 4A… My hair is very manageable, it is a lot of work but I love it.. I actually envy 4C hair…. LOL

3. What is your go to style and how do you maintain it?
My go to style would definitely be a puff… I am definitely a lazy natural (reason behind my 2nd big chop). Other than that I adore a good twist out, it is just very time consuming and my twist-outs generally only last about 2 days before I have to re-twists.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
My problem areas would be the “up keep.” Actually taking care of my hair the way that I should.. Co-washing, Deep conditioning, Learning how to make my own conditioner, hot oil treatments….. Really learning my hair became a process for me. YouTube has become my best friend, and going through certain “hair disasters” really made me realize how much love I need to put into my hair.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
Being natural has given me a different sense of self confidence. Media and Entertainment do not glorify women who have their natural hair, especially if it is short and kinky (I’d rather say kinky than the most used term of Nappy). When I first went natural (big chop) I was extremely insecure about the whole “short hair” thing I had going on.. I went out purchased a wig EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING that you can think of to prevent me from going outside with the short hair. After a while I embraced it, considering short hair-long hair, it doesn’t take away from who I am. Not to mention my husband absolutely LOVED MY CUT which made me feel even better.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Eco Styler Gel, Gorilla Snot Gel (which I just actually found out about and I love it) and Jojoba oil.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I cannot think of just 1 word to describe my personal style, but I will say that I definitely do not follow trends, I do not try.. I just go as I please… I definitely like to look nice, however I am not one to look at the latest fashion magazines to see what the latest looks are… I buy what I like and wear it however it looks appealing to me.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
I love H&M, Forever 21 and I’ve actually been supporting an online store 10dollarmall.com they have a lot of great quality clothing for cheap (and by cheap I mean everything on their website is 10 dollars) so it is very pocket friendly and it looks good too.

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
I would have to say Rihanna (she just doesn’t care- and I love that about her… she is fearless in everything she wears and she wears everything well) , Folake Huntoon (Blogger- she goes by StylePantry on Instagram) and of course June Ambrose.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
The most worn piece in my closet I would have to be my jean shirt or red flannel top… I wear these pieces A LOT, and the funny thing is I never really wear them on my back, normally they are tied around my waist.. You can never go wrong with a denim top or flannel shirt tied around the waist! It seems to go well with everything

11. What is your favorite Fall trend?
If I had to choose I would say a fur… FUR ANYTHING! FAUX FUR of course J Skirt, Dress, Jeans… the right fur can bring out the best in an outfit.

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
One of the most prized item is a light blue beaded small shoulder purse which was my great grandmother's… I found it in my mother’s closet and it’s been with me ever since. I hardly wear it, but when I do… I DO ;)

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration from?  I would say my style inspiration definitely comes from my mother… She was definitely full of style and fashion back then and still is now.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
The greatest advice I could ever give someone including things I am still working on within myself, is to just be happy…. Don’t focus so much on what societies ideas of beauty are, focus more so on how you FEEL when you get dressed in the morning… Never doubt the beauty that you have been blessed with, internal beauty shines brighter than the most expensive shoes or clothes money can ever buy. Be true to yourself and never lose yourself in someone else.

CHIC of The Week| Samara AKA StyledChic

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week’s CHIC is the beautiful Samara. Samara is the fashion, beauty, and natural hair blogger of Styled Chic! What caught our eye about Samara is how feminine, classic, and of course CHIC she is. You can find Samara in the cutest printed dresses or a nice classic blazer!  We also love Samara’s current protective style.  For the past two months she has been wearing crochet braids and we are totally obsessed with this style! They look amazing on her, definitely a perfect protective style idea! Check out what Samara had to say about her style and natural hair journey.

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have been natural for 4 1/2 years now.  I transitioned for about 5 months and then finally did the big chop!  I could no longer wait!

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
I would describe my hair as kinky curly.  I have very small springy curls!

3. What is your favorite go to hair style?
My favorite go to style would definitely be a bantu knot out on straight hair (when I wanna go for a sexy look).  Or I will go to my two strand twist out just out of habit!

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
I think my biggest challenge would be detangling my hair and the time it takes to do so.  I'm constantly on the search for great products to help aid in reducing time and that creates lots of slip to prevent breakage!

5. What do you love most about being natural?
What I love most about being natural is the versitilty of how I can wear my hair.  I also love that I can be proud to wear my own hair and rock how it naturally grows out of my head!

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Alikay Naturals Caribbean Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner & Beautiful Textures Curl Pudding!

6. How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style depends on my mood and what look I'd like to go for.  The occasion, where I'm going, etc.  I will say that my style is simple, yet chic and I like to spice things up with color too!

7. What are your favorite clothing stores?
Definitely H&M, F21, Zara, Shop LunaB, and Nasty Gal!

8. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Lauren Conrad, Miranda Kerr, Jessica Alba, and Zoe Saldana!

9. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
This summer, probably my white jeans because they just go so easily with everything!

10. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge? What do you cherish most in your closet?
I really cannot pick one item alone.  I like to cherish every item in my closet because I spent money on them or the may have been a gift.  I like to take good care of them all!

11. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Always keep things classy and timeless.  Even if you do go sexy there's a way to do it.  I always say that when I look at a photo 10 years from now of myself I'd still like to be able to say that I look good and would totally rock the look now!

12. Given your natural hair journey, what do you wish you would have known earlier and what would be your advice to your fellow curl friends?!
There's nothing really I wish that I would have known.  I think my journey was great, no real frustrations or mishaps. My advice to curl friends would be to really research if you have questions.  Take the time to learn about your own curl pattern and how to take care of it yourself before you look at the next girl and then start comparing.  I went natural when there wasn't a truckload of info out there like there is now.  And I was still able to figure things out.  I'm always amazed at women today who still can't really figure out a twist out for example or what products work best for them.  It's all about doing your own learning.  Just figure it out!

CHIC Style| Tia Nicole

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

On any given day you may see Tia Nicole walking the streets of Baltimore wearing a CHIC floppy hat and a nice pair of shades. Her style ranges from classic CHIC to retro CHIC. She gives some of her fits a sporty look by adding one of many pairs of Converse sneakers. Shoes are her thing and she uses them well! We can't fail to mention her awesome fro! Take a look at what she had to say about her personal style and hair journey.

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have been natural for about six years now and I transitioned into it.   I definitely was not brave enough to do the big chop at that point in my life.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair texture is probably a 3C even though I don’t consider myself an expert on this matter.

3. What is your favorite go to hair style?
I love wearing my hair out, big and curly.  I have known about clip-ins before they were really popular, so I have always favored adding volume to my hair with them.  I moved to California right about the time I decided to go natural.  I found a store in California that sold tons of curly hair.  I found some hair close to my texture and made clips that blended perfectly with my hair.  I like it big and full of volume.  I still do that to this day.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
I have been wearing my hair natural for quite sometime.  When you first transition, I think it takes a while to really get to know what your hair likes and doesn’t like.  At this point, I am pretty much comfortable with my hair.  As my life is getting busier and especially since I have picked up blogging, I have gotten a bit lazy with my hair.  I really don’t like to wear it out because it takes a lot of work.  Protective styles are really my best friend at this point.  I think it especially allows me to play with color and I don’t have to put heat on my hair.  I love color but I will never put it in my natural hair again.  I have never found anything that didn’t damage my hair and it is just not worth it.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I feel like my hair is stronger and healthier.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Shea Moisture is my favorite product period.  I try not to overload on products so once it is done, I move onto something else or if I like it, I stay brand loyal.  I hate clutter and I have had problems with hair product overload.  I promised myself that I would never buy products on top of products.  Right now, Shea Moisture does it all for me.  The Coconut and Hibiscus…OMG, it smells so good.  I use the hair products and bath products.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
I have such a hard time defining my style.  If I see it and I like it, I buy it!  I will admit, I favor black looks but every time I say that, I am never wearing black.  I also love a good suit.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
Zara, Urban Outfitters and Free People.  I should have stock in these companies because of how much I spend on a yearly basis.  They are my go-to for my work and casual looks!

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Sarah Jessica Parker, Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen, Cassie, Jourdann Dunn and Solange.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
It will probably have to be my converse.  Just as much as I love hats I also love shoes.  I work for an online retailer that sells shoes, so my obsession has grown pretty substantially.  Converse pretty much has me in their pocket.  I’ll be a fan for life.

11. As we prep for fall, what is your favorite Fall trend! What are you excited about?
Knee-high and thigh-high boots!  I am completely obsessed with them.  My legs are so skinny and I have never been able to find a pair of boots that actually fit my legs until recently.  I plan to splurge on a pair of Stuart Weitzman boots for Fall.  They fit like a glove and they are very comfortable.  I have my eyes on the Hijack boot and the Highland Boot.

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge?
The first designer thing I have ever purchased was a pair of Chanel aviator glasses when I turned 21.  Years later, they are still my most prized possession.

13. Where do you draw your style inspiration?
I work in fashion marketing and I also teach fashion merchandising.  Nevertheless, I find it very important to always educate yourself and as I do so, I draw inspiration from numerous places.  I read WWD, Vogue magazine’s from all over the world, Style.com, T Magazine, blogs, Love Magazine; you name it, I probably have a tear sheet laying around somewhere.

14. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Get to know the brands and silhouettes that work best for your shape.  I think it is important to dress for your body and be comfortable in those items.

CHIC of the Week| Chioma

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week's CHIC is the lovely Chioma, the Kentucky based style blogger of “Chioma’s Evolution of Style”. We fell in love when we found Chioma through our Instagram page. Her style is so CHIC, and effortlessly classy. Chioma gets it right every time with her love for bright fun colors, and mixed prints. She has a style that we can definitely learn a few things from! Check out our interview with Chioma below.

1.How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I’ve been natural 3.5 years. I did both. I transitioned under protective styles for a year, went in for the big chop from my stylist and then had another protective style installed until I was comfortable styling my hair at its new length.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
I have very coily and kinky textured hair. I think my hair type would best be described as 4b/4c.

3. What is your favorite go to hair style?
I love twist outs on blown out hair and wearing my hair in marley twists in humid weather to give my hair a break.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
The back half of my hair is very tightly coiled so in humid weather, I experience major shrinkage. I have been styling my hair when it’s dry a lot more this year and that has helped keep my stretched styles elongated longer.

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I love how versatile it is. I think being natural has not only enhanced my confidence but my personal style.

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in detangler, (does Castor Oil count?), & the Shea butter whip I make for my hubby and I. I’m pretty excited to try a couple of Oyin Handmade products when I remove my Marley Twists this fall.

7. How would you describe your personal style?
Classic & Funky. I love bright colors and unique prints. It excites me to see how I can pair the two. I also love a classic midi skirt and I adore blouses and button downs.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
H&M, Forever 21, Zara, Asos, Target, & of course Thrift Stores!

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
Solange, June Ambrose, Tracee Ellis Ross, & Lupita. Honestly most of my inspiration comes from fellow fashion bloggers and the everyday woman I see with captivating style.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
In the Spring/Summer: Skirts. In the Fall/Winter: Blazers.

11. As we prep for fall, what is your favorite Fall trend! What are you excited about?
I am loving how Ankara print is popping up all over the place! Being a Nigerian-American girl, it just speaks to me. I’m also excited to snag a couple of twin sets.

12. What would you say is yourmost prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge? What do you cherish most in your closet?
Hmmm…that’s a great question. Can I say my engagement and wedding band? lol My hubby customized them and they’re gorgeous if i do say so myself. It’s the one thing I wear everyday. ;) Aside from that, I’d say my vintage Dooney&Bourkey cross body purse was a pretty amazing designer thrift find!

13. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Wear clothing that flatters your body type, makes you feel confident and beautiful, reflects your personality, and just have fun with it!

14. Given your natural hair journey, what do you wish you would have known earlier and what would be your advice to your fellow curl friends?!
I wish I hadn’t become a product junkie the first year of my natural hair journey (ha!). I also wish I had never gotten color in my hair, it looked beautiful, but the health of my hair deteriorated greatly. To my fellow curl friends, I would advise you to find a simple routine that helps your hair retain moisture and just be patient. Oh, and don’t compare your hair to other naturals, no matter how tempting it may be!

Any parting words for us and our readers?
Thank you so much for reaching out to me for this feature and for those of you reading this, it was a pleasure chatting with you! Hope to see your faces over on the blog! :)

I started the Hey Curlie No Heat Challenge because of a few factors. I woke up one morning saying I am not going to use heat for the next 6mths. Lol, sounds crazy for some but It was a challenge I was willing to accept. I was inspired by my followers because of the questions I receive concerning retaining length and heat damage. You'll be surprise on how many people depend on heat for styling when it's not necessary. So I thought this would be a great way for those willing to participate to encourage each other on their journey to healthy hair.

CHIC of the Week| Crystal Rollins

CHIC of the WeekCHICNaturalistasComment

This week's CHIC is one of our favorite naturalistas, Crystal Rollins! We absolutely love Crystal and her style. She always shows such versatility and she mixes her style up so effortlessly. We love following her on Instagram as she shows us multiple ways to style pieces which inspires us daily; also it doesn’t hurt that she has amazing thick curls to compliment her bold CHIC style!! Check out what she had to say about her natural hair journey and her personal style.

1. How long have you been natural? Did you transition or big chop?
I have been natural for 4 years. I big chopped on August 25, 2010, wore a fade for one year before growing my hair out, only to big chop again and have mini chopped twice since 2011. I’m currently resisting the urge to BC again.

2. How would you describe your hair texture?
My hair texture is coarse and tightly coiled.

3. What is your favorite go to hair style?
Before my hair was long enough to bun without bobby pin assistance, my favorite go to hair style was a twist out but since retaining more length, I’ve lived in a bun; its chic, effortless, and goes with all clothing styles in my opinion.

4. What are your problem areas if any and how are you working to combat them?
My problem area is moisture retention which I combat with the LOC method and the newly implemented weekly deep conditioning treatments as opposed to bi-weekly (or the occasional monthly TLC).

5. What do you love most about being natural?
I love being natural because I can do whatever I want whenever I want to! #Unlimited

6. What are your top 3 hair products?
Currently my top three products are Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist, a concoction of EVOO, Coconut, Carrot, and Castor oils, and Aunt Jackie’s Knot on My Watch Instant Detangling Therapy (leave-in).

7. How would you describe your personal style?
My style is very versatile, it’s a combination of relaxed, casual, vintage, hipster, retro boho, classic & chic! Comfortable above all.

8. What are your favorite clothing stores?
Although I shop various (retail) stores my favorite will always be any thrift store!

9. Who are your favorite celebrity fashionistas?
My favorite celebrity fashionistas include but definitely aren’t limited to Miranda Kerr, Taylor Swift, Solange Knowles, Jennifer Lopez, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jessica Alba, Beyonce Knowles-Carter, Oliva Wilde, Jessica Biel, & Nicole Richie.

10. What is the most worn piece in your closet?
My most worn piece is a pair of DIY shorts from thrifted jeans; I literally wear them with anything!

11.  What is your favorite Spring/ Summer trend?
My favorite summer, fall and Winter (in Texas lol- with stockings) trend is high waist shorts

12. What would you say is your most prized item in your closet? Is it a vintage charm you found thrifting, or a designer splurge? What do you cherish most in your closet?
I consider all of my thrifted vintage pieces prized possessions, but I cherish my leopard print scarf that my late grandma gave to me the most.

13. Since you are obviously a ChicNaturalista what would be a bit of fashion advice for our readers?
Be creative with your wardrobe, think of inexpensive ways to play up different styles and collect multipurpose pieces such as button down shirts, crop tops, and solid color bottoms. Also patterns and prints can be your best friends as you can mix prints for bold and risky looks!

14. Given your natural hair journey, what do you wish you would have known earlier and what would be your advice to your fellow curl friends?!
At the start of my natural hair journey I wish I would have known how to properly moisturize my hair. Moisturized hair is essential to healthy hair! Maintain balance. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! (Everything in moderation though for too much of anything could be bad for you.)
